Getting in touch

The fastest way to get help is email, and a little detail goes a long way.

When reporting a problem, it helps enormously if you can include your iPhone model, your iOS version, the Bluetooth Itch version (shown in Settings inside the app), and what you were doing when it happened. Screenshots are always welcome. If a specific device is misbehaving, tell us what it is and, if you can, export a CSV scan log and attach it.

Common questions

Answers to the things people ask us most.

01

Why does the app need Bluetooth permission?

Scanning is the whole app. iOS requires your explicit permission before any app can listen for Bluetooth advertisements, so without it there is nothing to show. You can review it any time in iOS Settings › Privacy & Security › Bluetooth.

02

Why can't I see my iPhone, Mac or headphones?

Bluetooth Itch sees Bluetooth Low Energy advertisements, which is what iOS allows apps to scan for. Older Bluetooth Classic audio devices don't advertise that way, and a device that is already connected and idle often stops advertising entirely. Earbuds in a closed case are usually silent too, so open the case to bring them back.

03

Why do some devices show as unknown?

Not every device broadcasts a name. Many, including Apple's, also rotate their identifier every few minutes for privacy, which is why the same device can reappear as a new entry. Bluetooth Itch identifies what it can from the manufacturer data and service UUIDs, but if a device broadcasts nothing useful there is nothing to name it with. Pin it as a favourite and give it your own name.

04

What does dBm mean, and is it a distance?

dBm is the received signal strength. Closer to zero is stronger, so -40 dBm is very close and -90 dBm is far or behind something. It's a useful guide rather than a measurement: walls, bodies, pockets and battery level all affect it, so treat it as warmer and colder rather than metres.

05

The radar isn't leading me anywhere

The radar follows signal strength, so it needs the device to still be advertising and it needs you to move. Walk slowly, turn on the spot during a sweep, and watch the percentage rather than any single reading. If the device has gone flat or is inside a closed case, there is no signal left to follow.

06

Background alerts aren't arriving

Check that notifications are allowed for Bluetooth Itch in iOS Settings. Background detection also relies on a favourite advertising a service UUID that iOS can watch for; devices that broadcast nothing but manufacturer data can't be monitored while the app is closed. iOS also decides when to wake the app, so alerts can arrive a little late.

07

I bought Pro but don't see it

Open the app's settings and tap Restore Purchases, making sure you're signed in to the same Apple Account you bought with. If it still doesn't appear, email us and we'll sort it out.

08

Where is my data stored?

On your device. Bluetooth Itch has no account, no login and no server of its own, so your scans, favourites and logs never reach us. That also means deleting the app removes them, so if you're switching phones, make sure your device backup is up to date first.

09

Can I get my scan data out?

Yes, with Pro. The share button exports your full scan log as a CSV file, which you can send to yourself or open in a spreadsheet. It's a plain file that goes wherever you send it, and nowhere else.

Bluetooth Itch Pro

Managing your subscription, billing and refunds.

Bluetooth Itch Pro is available as a yearly subscription, or as a one-time Lifetime purchase. All billing is handled by Apple through the App Store, so we never see or store your payment details.

Manage or cancel a subscription

On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions, and choose Bluetooth Itch. From there you can change your plan or cancel. You can also manage everything at apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions.

Subscriptions renew automatically unless auto-renewal is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep Pro until the period you've paid for runs out. If you started a free trial, cancel before it ends to avoid being charged.

Refunds

Because Apple processes all App Store purchases, refunds are handled by Apple rather than by us. You can request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

If something in the app went wrong and led to the purchase, do tell us as well. We cannot issue the refund ourselves, but we can usually fix the underlying problem.

Policies

Read the Bluetooth Itch privacy policy for exactly what the app does and doesn't collect, and our app terms of use for the terms covering Bluetooth Itch and our other apps. Bluetooth Itch collects no data at all: there is no account, no analytics and no server.

A word on fair use

Bluetooth Itch shows public Bluetooth Low Energy advertisements, the same broadcasts any nearby device can pick up. It's built for finding your own things and for working on your own hardware. Please don't use it to follow or locate other people, and remember that signal strength is a rough guide to distance, never a precise position.

If your question isn't answered here, just email us. We would rather hear from you than have you guessing.

Feature requests are genuinely welcome too. A good part of what Bluetooth Itch does came from people telling us what they were actually trying to find.
